This is the timeline for The Exorcist franchise, including the six films, The Ninth Configuration and the television series.
Timeline Reasoning
Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist places itself in 1947, before Exorcist: The Beginning.
Exorcist: The Beginning is a retooled "remake" of Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist after the executives rejected that version. It is an almost entirely different film with new actors and almost everyone has a different name. This timeline, for simplicity, assumes that it takes place after Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist, which both tell of two encounters Merrin had in Africa which helped him regain his faith. This film takes place 2 years later, in 1949.
The Exorcist takes place in 1975 based on a gravestone in The Exorcist III. That movie also places itself in 1990 and states that the first film happened 15 years ago.
The Ninth Configuration most likely takes place shortly afterwards, as it deals with soldiers afflicted with PTSD during Vietnam. Billy Cutshaw, a minor character in The Exorcist, features in this film, albeit recast. The novel this film is based on is part of William Blatty's Trilogy of Faith trilogy, which includes The Exorcist, The Ninth Configuration and Legion (adapted into The Exorcist III).
Exorcist II: The Heretic takes
The Exorcist: Legion VR came out in 2018 but features Pazuzu. Since they were seemingly taken out in The Exorcist Season 1 and did not appear in The Exorcist: Believer, I have opted to place the game before the series at the present.
The only potential workaround to fit the TV series into canon after The Exorcist: Believer is to assume that the TV series versions of Chris and Regan are different characters who happen to share the same name and generalised events of the movie. I do expect this interpretation to get very convoluted throughout Season 1 however, and will adjust accordingly. The series places Merrin and Karras' deaths in March 11th, and if this ties back into the MacNeil family, we can use this to place the TV series' version of The Exorcist in 1971, since March 11th comes from Legion (novel) which does that exact thing. Alternatively, 1973 is an option based on release dates. Likely, the series will be relegated to a separate timeline.
