This is the timeline for the G.I. Joe Cinematic Universe, consisting, for now, of the two movies G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and G.I. Joe: Retaliation, and their comics adaptation/prequel/sequel.

I choose to not include the game G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and the G.I. Joe: Operation H.I.S.S. webisodes, as they are clearly not matching with the movies, and feat more to introduce the toyline released by Hasbro.

I've not yet include the chapters for the movies, but I will soon.

I've put a * on certain titles because I don't possess them yet, and so, could'nt put them properly on the timeline.

Dates put in Bold are official ones given in movies and comics. Other dates are hypothesises.

Movies are in Bold.
Comics and novels are in Italic.

HYPOTHESIS

I've decided to put the year 2009 for the flashback of Snake Eyes which occurs "20 years earlier" the first movie.
Why:
- the advertisings on the Tokyo's towers are the one of 2009's Spring (May, if I remember right).
- in the beginning of the first movie, we have: "In the not too distant future...", which means the movie can't happen in 2009 (its release year), but in some future years... maybe a decade or two in the future.

With 2009 being 20 years earlier, the movie then is happening in 2028.
A date which can easily feat with the speech of James McCullen (in the first movie) saying his ancestror lived near 400 years ago.

To place G.I. Joe: Retaliation, we can thank Roadblock and Lady Jaye, who give or show some precise dates:
- Roadblock says he became like a brother with Snake Eyes 6 years ago
- Roadblock says he knows Stoop (the black thug) since 14.
- Lady Jaye shows to the other Joes conferences of the real President (July 31st) and the flase President (September 1st), with dates on them. With these we can learn that only few months happen between the first and the second movie.

To place some other dates, I've used clues like "graduate to college" or the minimum age to enlist in the army (17 if your parents are agree, 18 if not) or physical appearances of the characters.. or the real age of actors when they've done the movie.

Nice, only thing is some stuff appears out of order in terms of your dating. You have the Retaliation movie prequel (listed as 2 and 3 years after Retaliation--I think you meant 2-3 years BEFORE Retaliation, and it's also listed before the 20 Years Ago notations, not sure if that's correct).

But awesome job. Very cool!

Thank you :)

No, It's written correctly, it's after the comics Retaliation Movie Prequel #2, but in it too.
In fact, it's in the same comic (issue 2), and the page 12 happens 2 years after the page 10.
There is a 2 years gap between the page 10 and 12. And a 3 years gap between page 14 and 17.

Maybe it's better if I put only the hypothesis date and erase "many years ago", "some time ago"... it will be more comprehensible, maybe?

Probably. My bad.

Ok, how about now?

When I will receive the novelizations of Rise of Cobra and Above & Beyond, I think it will be more precise and more comprehensible.
I've read somewhere there were added scenes in the books which help to understand some plot holes of the movie.

EDIT: I've found Snake Eyes #2 and added it in the timeline.

Yeah, definitely better. Impressive either way! Nice job.

I remember reading the Above & Beyond novel back when the first movie came out, though honestly don't remember anything about it.

Is there any evidence for it occurring about 20 years in the future. I suppose the vehicles and tech are good arguments for setting the events of the movies around then, just wondered if there was any hard evidence from the movies, books, comics, etc. It's me, you know how I am. ;)

Yeah, I'm happy too to see how it's turned.

I will have the novels this week if the postman doesn't mess.

Hmm, there is "In the not too distant future..." line, the nano-technology, the accelerator suits, holograms, invisible suit, laser or impulse weapons, homing bullets or arrows, the McCullen line about "400 centuries ago..." his ancestror was already a weapon dealer.

There is the building of the Tokyo towers, beginning in 1999.. so the movie must be after this date. And as I said, the advertising on them in the movie is the one of 2009 (I've checked it with a japanese translator, thanx to the エイブル (Able) advertising and another one wrote vertically).
The flashback of the young Snake Eyes happening "20 years earlier".

Well, since I've watched the uncut version of Retaliation today, I've seen the A8 Atomic Summit is the one of 2012:

609316A82012.jpg

And Zartan said to the president he is at the White House for many months now.

If we look at the real A8 of 2012, it happened on the March 26-27.
(And the one of 2010, the April 12-13).
Which means it's always between the end of March and the beginning of April.

Then, Rise of Cobra must have happened in 2011, the "not too distant future" working too here, as the first movie was released in 2009.

Conclusion: I will edit much of the dates to feat with this new information.

It's official...you and I are obviously twins somehow separated at birth.
