Pretty sure the place the crime boss was at was some sort of mineral refining facility, so if there was a meteorite crash nearby he probably thought there would be a good place to look
Stryker could have met a Nigerian crime boss earlier at his mineral-refining facility in Lagos, Nigeria. At the time, Stryker was seeking rare minerals for military applications, so he approached the crime boss to negotiate a supply.

During one of their meetings, Stryker noticed an unusual rock displayed as a souvenir on the crime boss’s desk. Intrigued, he asked about it and requested both the rock and information about its origin. The crime boss refused. Stryker got nothing from the crime boss.

Later, Stryker returned with Team X, pressuring the crime boss for information about the rock’s source. The crime boss revealed that it had been found near a small village.

Team X was sent to that village to investigate. The villagers knew the true origin of the rock but refused to say, which led to a violent conflict. This incident caused Logan to leave Team X.

Eventually, Stryker traced the source to a meteorite impact site in Africa and secured the meteor himself. The meteorite had crashed before 1973.

The meteorite metal, was combined with steel to create a new alloy: Adamantium.

In Revised Timeline something similar happened, but without Team X.
