Marvel Cinematic Universe - Timeline

Wow. For someone I've never met personally, that news hit me. I haven't been on this sight lately, but I would always head over here to see what he had to say, he worked so hard and thoroughly on this that you would have been foolish not to take his work into account. I know we went back and forth once or twice, but it was never out of malice, it was out of passion for something we all love, and his dedication to this timeline, something that only a select group of people will every be able to truly appreciate, will always be remembered.

We will forever be thankful to you Irish. Thank you for your work, thank you for your dedication, and thank you for your patience.

Admin here.

If you guys can come up with a way to keep making changes and updates to the timelines I'm happy to accommodate.

For anyone who didn't know, David and I were in the process of moving the timelines to a new, separate site - http://thetimelinesite.com

He was the brains and I was the brawn. He maintained the timelines, I maintained the site. I don't really know anything about the timelines themselves, I just drove the vehicle, so to speak.

One idea I had was to transform everything into a wiki that anyone could edit, but I defer to the community.

@freshmaker Was there ever an official word on whether the stark expo videos were official canon or not? I noticed IrishDB has it on his timeline but you don't have them on yours.

If you mean the (continued) timeline on this site, look under 1974 and 2010 and you'll see them:

I was referring to @freshmaker 's timeline on p15 of this thread. I see that the DIrishB timeline does have it but freshmaker does not. So I was asking if there was some discrepancy on canonicity of these videos.

I searched around and didn't find anything where anyone says one way or another about the canonicity of the Stark Expo videos. I don't include any of the promotional videos or material in the order of publication list.

@freshmaker Ahh gotcha, I thought they fit much into the category of the WHIH clips (which seem to be promotional as well). They seem less "official" than the one-shots like "Item 47" but seem on the same level of the WHIH videos. But thanks for the clarification!

There are a number of non-canon MCU comic books, either directly influenced by the story, appearance, style, etc of MCU movies or directly spun off from it, however since these are considered non-canon by Marvel they're not included.

The same applies to the various MCU inspired or spin-off video games. These are considered non-canon and not included.

Everything is color-coded based on the characters: Captain America entries are blue, Iron Man entries are red, Thor entries are dark cyan, The Incredible Hulk entries are green, The Avengers entries are in black, Guardians of the Galaxy entries are in purple, Ant-Man entries are in dark red, Dr. Strange entries are in violet, Black Panther entries are in navy, Captain Marvel entries in gold, and all TV episodes (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Agent Carter, Inhumans, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, The Defenders, Runaways) are in gray.

DVD chapters of the films and TV series episodes are bolded and comics are italicized, while the Marvel One-Shots are in regular text with the titles contained in quotation marks.

Anything marked with a ** is placed tentatively until its official release (in cases of the movies, their release on DVD, and in cases of TV episodes, until at least their air date).

Also a very special thanks to everyone for their invaluable assistance, research, corrections, and suggestions. Honestly a fair amount of the work in regards to this timeline are owed to the forum members over on thecomicboard.com who've contributed info and suggestions. Thanks again.

Placement Reasoning

Agent Carter - Season 1:

1.) Agent Carter 1x01 "Now is Not the End" features two conflicting dates shown on newspapers (ironically newspapers read on the same day by Peggy). The first paper's date shows Sunday April 21, 1946 whereas the second paper's date shows June 24, 1946. Neither date can be taken as accurate since dialogue later on specifically places 1x05: "The Iron Ceiling" occurring on April 27, 1946 (and two days prior), meaning both dates have to be ignored, though we can at least use the April date since thats reaffirmed in the final episode occurring on anniversary of VE day (May 8).

Agent Carter - One Shot:

1.) This is placed between Seasons 1 and 2 of the Agent Carter TV show per the intentions of the AC TV showrunners. Further, the plot and character arcs seemingly support that order: There is one bit of discontinuity with that timeline, however. In the one-shot, Carter works for an agent named John Flynn, head of the S.S.R. However, for the entire duration of Season One, Carter works for S.S.R. Chief Roger Dooley, and no mention is made of Flynn. Without inventing some excuse for why Flynn never appears on-screen, it seems difficult to reconcile the two as happening simultaneously. It would have made more sense, however, if the short took place immediately after the TV series Season 1, for several reasons. First, during the one-shot, Flynn refuses to send Carter into the field, but does utilize her for her codebreaking skills. However, in one of the later episodes in Season One, the SSR brings in an outside crypt-analyst to break a Russian code, and Chief Dooley seems taken aback when Carter is able to crack it herself. That implies that she has not (yet) spent any significant time as a code breaker for the SSR. Second, Dooley dies in the season finale, leaving an opening for Flynn to come in and take over. And finally, as Season 1 wraps up, Peggy is unsure if she's going to remain at the SSR, putting her in the perfect position to be recruited by Stark for SHIELD.

Finally, a simplified viewing/reading order for the MCU timeline:

I think that some movies and series don't come from the same chronology. To me it's a theory

This is the old, original thread. DIrishB sadly passed away some years ago.

There's no theory in the fact that all these shows are part of the same chronology though. I mean, come on. It's ridiculous to deny now. Everyone that didn't know Netflix was canon before knows it now.

And since you must know Netflix is canon, you should know Netflix and Cloak & Dagger reference each other. Misty Knight and Brigid O'Reilly are friends, Brigid is mentioned in Luke Cage. Mike Colter's Luke Cage appears on a newspaper in Cloak & Dagger and there's a long conversation about him.

Runaways has a crossover with Cloak & Dagger. So, the Marvel Studios movies are the same universe as Netflix, Cloak & Dagger and Luke Cage. The Darkhold from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. appears in Runaways.

When I put "->", I mean that it connects.

All TV Shows -> Marvel Studios
Marvel Studios -> Agent Carter
Marvel Studios -> The Defenders
Agent Carter -> Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. -> Agent Carter
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. - > The Defenders
The Defenders -> Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
The Defenders -> Cloak & Dagger
Inhumans -> Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Runaways -> Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Runaways -> Cloak & Dagger
Cloak & Dagger -> Agent Carter
Cloak & Dagger -> The Defenders
Cloak & Dagger -> Runaways

All of these TV shows reference each other and the films. They are all the same universe. There's no theory. That's like theorising that The Empire Strikes Back is a different chronology to A New Hope because Luke's face looks a little different.

He Who Remains explains to us that one day a variant of Kang discovered that there were universes that coexisted parallel to each other. Everything was fine for a while until the multiversal war arrived. He specifies << some variants seeking to conquer other universes, causing a huge war. The variants trying to preserve their universes by destroying the others, until almost everything disappears >>. This is the concept of incursions. The Kangs playing with the multiverse, they caused incursions leading to the destruction of the multiverse.

I am subscribed to a youtuber who loves the Marvel universe. He discovered a lot of things about the Loki series and he explained how the multiverse works. He thinks there are two multiverses, with two different timelines. Here are the sites where he found all this information. Kevin bukkart

Essentially this is the origin of Kang since he first appeared in Marvel Comics.

He Who Remains of Earth-199999 essentially won that offscreen war and split that universe off into its own nexus or cluster. That's been stated in the show, albeit in loose, vague terms.

So yes, technically there is "more than one multiverse" but only artificially because HWR clipped one timeline from THE one multiverse somehow; and now that's grown into it's own cosmic tree of timelines adjacent to it.
